daughter of the late Benjamin Villepontoux of this city, Saturday Oct. 30, 1819.

DECEMBER, 1765, TO AUGUST, 1766

The marriage licenses listed here are taken from a volume of "Records of the Proceedings in the Court of Ordinary" from December 21, 1764, to August 28, 1771. This volume has recently been returned to South Carolina through the courtesy of the Overseers of Tufts College, Massachusetts, it having been in that Library of that college for many years.

Benjamin served in the Revolutionary War & Jane had to petition for her husband to be reinstated as a citizen of this country.

Charlotte Manby Villepontoux, b: 15 Jun 1773, Charleston, SC; d: 9 Mar 1844, Charleston Dist., SC; married on 1 Jun 1797 to William Miles Heyward, b: 12 Sep 1763, St. Andrews Parish, SC; d: 28 Oct 1809, Charleston, SC; bur: Stoney Creek Independent Church, Prince William Parish, SC. This couple had 5 children: Anne Miles, William, Thomas, John Cuthbert, & Daniel Heyward.

a. Anne Miles Heyward, b: 6 Jun 1798, Charleston, SC; d: 24 Dec 1848, Bethel Plantation, Pocotaligo, Beaufort, SC; on 5 Jan 1818 m: Col. James Cuthbert, b: 11 Jul 1793; d: 15 Aug 1838. They had 10 children: Mary, James, Jane Hay, Elizabeth Heyward, John Alexander, Elizabeth Heyward, Anne Heyward, Charlotte, Elizabeth Heyward, & Daniel Heyward Cuthbert. Of these 10, the first 2 lived to get married, & it was the Mary who married Thomas Rhett Smith Elliott Sr. in 1839, son of Hon. William Elliott & Ann Hutchinson Smith. Mary had 13 children & of those only 3 got married & had children.

b. Capt. William Heyward, b: 31 Jul 1800; d: 21 Sep 1871, Charleston, SC; on 22 May 1828, married Mary Augusta Barron, b: 9 May 1806; d: 2 Jul 1845. This couple had 1 child: Augusta Berkeley Heyward, b: 23 May 1830; d: aft 1872. On 30 Mar 1852, married Middleton Stuart Hanckel, MD, b: 17 Apr 1827; d: 12 Mar 1904, New York. They had 6 children: Mary Augusta, Middleton Stuart, Henry Stuart, William Heyward, Christine Rebecca, & James Stuart Hanckel.

c. Thomas Heyward, b: 9 Jul 1805; d: 5 Nov 1828; on 30 Nov 1824 married Charity Wilson (daughter of Capt. Robert Wilson & Charity Latham [another cousin of mine], b: 8 Oct 1802; d: 4 Nov 1829. They had 2 children: Charlotte Charity & Sarah Jane Heyward. Sarah married Thomas Middleton Hanckel & had one child, Charles Francis Hanckel.

d. John Cuthbert Heyward, (my direct ancestor) chr: 20 Nov 1807, Charleston, SC; d: 20 Nov 1839, Beaufort Dist., SC. On 7 May 1827 married Constantia Smith Pritchard, b: 2 Sep 1814, Charleston, SC; d: 25 mar 1859, Rose Dhu Plantation, near Bluffton, Colleton, SC. This couple had 3 children: a. William Heyward who married Anna Louisa Tobey, had 3 issue: i. John, b: 1852, d: 1854; ii. Mary Constantia Smith Heyward, b: 1854; d: 1939 & married Rev. Isaac Peck (their son, Isaac Heyward Peck is cousin who wrote "The Villepontoux Family of South Carolina : An Outline Genealogy and History of the First Five Generations"); iii. Caroline Elizabeth Heyward, b. 1863; d: 1885; on 17 May 1883 m: William Money Thacher. no issue. b. Elizabeth F. Heyward, b: 31 Jul 1832; d: 3 Sep 1902, Savannah, GA; on 10 Apr 1856 married Arminius Emelius Oemler, MD, b: 24 Sep 1826, Savannah, Chatham, GA; d: 8 Aug 1897, Savannah, Chatham Ga. They had 7 children: Augustus, Constantius H., Elizabeth Latham, Arminius, Mary Alexander, John Norton (my direct ancestor), & Charlotte Heyward Oemler. c, Thomas Wilson Heyward, b: 20 Feb 1834; d: 26 Oct 1868. ("Thomas W. Heyward enlisted with the Georgia Hussars Calvalry as a private on 17 Sep 1861, and was discharged on 9 Aug 1862, due to physical disability.")

e. Daniel Heyward, b: 16 Apr 1810; d: 27 Sep 1888; on 7 Feb 1833 married Anna Bull Maxcy, b: 23 Sep 1813; d: 4 Oct 1851. They had 9 children. Will list them in another ltr. Daniel also married on 11 Feb 1853 to Elizabeth Barnwell Rhett, b: 17 May 1828; d: 27 Jul 1865. They had 2 children.
