A passenger on the first ship that arrived in South Carolina for a successful settlement. He was the servant of Paul F. Smith who also was on the ship.

When Paul Smith "Preacher" died, William married his widow, Elizabeth.

 

The ship Carolina left England in October 1699 and arrived at Port Royal (now Paris Island) about 21 March 1670. Arrived at the Ashley River early in April and established a settlement at at Albemarle Point.
