Sometimes written as Lescot. He baptized Mary SIMMONS on the 23rd of September, 1701 in the French Church in Charleston.

in 1731 the London Walloon Church received a letter from the Charles Town French Church asking for a minister. A salary of ¹80 was offered and an additional ¹25 for passage. The letter is signed by Peter Fillen (Fillieu), estienne Mounier, Mathew Boigard, Jean le Breton, Andre de Veaux, Anthoine Bonneau, Jacob Satur, Joel Poinset, Jean Garnier, Jacob le Chantre, and C. Birot. It seems that soon after this Paul L'Escot returned to Carolina. He served the Charles Town French Church then until 1734.{34}

ESCOT's appear in the Bergerac Huguenot Registry.

It is possible, but not likely that ESCOT/L'ESCOT's are descended from a Scot in the employ of France. Since Escot is a French word, that is the likely origin of the name.

From Tony Fuller -

Well, having had a look at Proceedings XXVI, 5, p.449, it seems that the two Pierre/Peter Lorties were made bankrupt on the days mentioned in the piece. The names are also in Volumes 14, 21 & 24.

The name LORTIE and MALORTIE appears 109 times in 18 of the Hug Socs other publications together with all the other stuff that I have.

Volume XXXIII of the QS, Court Records of the Weavers Company of London, clearly identifies the two individuals concerned being apprenticed and then taking a number of apprentices themselves.

As for NETTLE, it only appears in V.25 of Proceedings, which is your reference and then there is just one Dutch/Walloon name (Nesstlested) in the records of the Norwich Church .

And of course the French word for nettle is ORTIE!!!

Rev. Paul L'ESCOT was the minister of the Charles Town Huguenot Church for

many years. He had a daughter, Frances, who married one Peter

VILLEPONTEAUX, a wealthy Huguenot. He died about 1747 and she about 1752.

They had one daughter, Frances, and four unnamed sons.

The date for Frances L'ESCOTT above must be wrong. The will for her husband does not mention

her. The incorrect date probably came from mother's will, which lists the name as Frances

L'Escott. She must have died before her husband who died in 1747.
