More research is needed to verify Virginia-SC Timmons relationships. We know from yDNA and Audited Accounts, that Abner, Samuel, Thomas, and Moses from Spartanburg, SC are the brothers of our John Timmons on Lynches River. There is also yDNA evidence verifying that a Timmons line in the Md, VA, DL area are related. There is circumstantial evidence that the father of these brothers in the Sgt. John Timmons (abt.1718-1799) of Shenandoah Valley Virginia. However, so far, none of the birth records in the Shenandoah Valley, that I have examined, have confirmed this (actually, I have found no Timmons birth records in any church record for this time period in Shenandoah Valley, but the Timmons stay there is well documented).

Also of interest is the record of SC land owned by the "old Mr. Timmings" while John Timmons (abt.1718-1799) was living in VA. These Early records are found in Anson County, NC. On 30 Aug 1753 Curtus Wood titled 300 acres on the south side of the Tyger River "Including an Improvement where old Mr. Timmings now lives Claimed by Stephen Holston beginning at a Maple at the mouth of a Branch on the River Bank Below Thomas Tamons's." (The Tygar River is a tributary of the Broad River.) Timmons/Timmings/Tamons appear to be the same person. In 1774, a chain of title was recorded saying that a resurvey of the border between North and South Carolina had determined that his land was in 96th District, SC. While most of the information is repeated in the chain, Timmings and Tamons were changed to read Timmons and "where old Mr. Timmings now lives" was changed to "where old Mr. Timmons formerly lived." So who is this "old Mr. Timmings"? 1750 is about the time Thomas Timmons was born in Virginia.

Additionally, in 1773, a John Timmons purchased 1000 acres of land from Francis Wilson on the Tyger River in South Carolina. 400 acres of land were granted to John and Thomas Timmons on Jack's Branch of the Pacolet River in 1767. Our John Timmons was granted land on Lynches River in 1769 and the Shenandoah Valley John Timmons was fighting in VA 1777-1779. So could the Shenandoah Valley John Timmons have been planning his move to SC and purchased the land on the Tygar River? Or is this "old Mr. Timmings" really the ancestor of the brothers that fought for Francis Marion.

Normally, we think of settlers moving up the rivers from the coast to settle SC. But there was a wagon trail along an Indian Trail, based on a Buffalo trail, that started in Philadelphia and came South through the Shenandoah Valley all the way to NC. On their 1775 "Map of the Most settled Parts of Virginia," Peter Jefferson and Joshua Fry said about the Great Valley Road "The Great Wagon Road from the Yadkin River through Virginia to Philadelphia distant 435 miles." (Planters and Pioneers: Life in Colonial Virginia by Parke, Jr. Rouse). The Yadkin River becomes the Pee Dee River in SC. But there are trails going from the Great Wagon Road leading to upstate SC.
