Joseph Timmons

FLORENCE - Joseph Adger Timmons, 66, of 3317 Woodburn Drive, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 5, 2004 after a courageous struggle with leukemia.

Born on December 18, 1937, Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shelby, of Florence. He was a son of the late Rufus and Mary Von Turner Timmons of Hannah. He is also survived by a brother, D.R. "Buster" (Gail) Timmons of Sumter; three nephews, Todd (Karen) Timmons of Sumter, Gregg (Vickie) Hyman of Johnsonville, and Mike Hyman of Maryland; one niece, Kristen (Charlie) Brutsch of Sumter; 57 nieces and nephews, 70 great nieces and nephews, and 34 great-great nieces and nephews. Joe had four namesakes, Merland Joseph Poston of Camden, Anthony Joseph Farmer of Pamplico, Todd Joseph Owens of Johnsonville and Patti Joe Cambagna of Princeton, New Jersey. Known as "Uncle Joe" by many children and friends everywhere, he was a devoted family man and took pride in the love of his family.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Hyman Craven, who died in 1973.

He was a former employee of T&K Manufacturing Company in Turbeville, proud servant of the Florence County Probate Court and a veteran of the United States Air Force.

His greatest accomplishments were those in service to the Lord. He was a member of Hillside Freewill Baptist Church in Florence, where he was currently the Men's Sunday School Class teacher. He served in every capacity over the years, as Deacon, Trustee, Church Secretary, Youth Director, former Sunday School Superintendent and Eastern Conference Sunday School Superintendent for 23 years. He was a member of the Men's Fellowship Group as well as the Merry at Heart Seniors Group. Joe also had an active role in the Outreach Program for the church when he spoke at Commander Nursing Home on a monthly basis.

A man of dignity and integrity, Joe was not a stranger to anyone. His kindness and generosity were shown to all who knew and loved him. His love of life will continue in the hearts of those dear to him.

Memorials may be sent to the Merry at Heart Seniors Group at Hillside Baptist Church, 2709 Fleetwood Drive, Florence, SC 29505.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday at Hillside Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Millbranch Cemetery in Johnsonville.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Soudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Dr. James C. Smith, Dr. Robert Stewart and Dr. Orachun Sitti.
