Note on Husband: John Calvin(?) TIMMONS

John is documented to have fought for Francis Marion at the Battle of Eutaw Springs (1782). Also his brothers Samuel, Thomas and Abner fought for the Swamp Fox. (Who is the Jesse Timmons on the Francis Marion Nov. 1779 roll?)

Note that the will below says that this is John Senior. But in the Audited accounts (AA7816 page 7) Samuel calls John his brother. Also, Thomas in X1252, mentions John, with adjacent entry X1251 for Abner and X1253 for Samuel with the same date. Entries Z296 and Z297 for Samuel and John are adjacent and the same date, even though not in alphabetical order. These and other reasons, along with yDNA tests makes me believe that this John's father is the John Timmons that had other sons of Samuel, Thomas, Moses and Abner.

"History of South Carolina" Volume 4, by David Duncan Wallace, published by The American Historical Society, New York,

1932, page 457 says - "The founder of the Timmons family in America was a French Huguenot, according to tradition, and an officer of the French Navy. Though settled in Charleston, his son John was born in Virginia in 1740, but located in South Carolina, marrying Mary or Mollie Simmons of North Carolina."

It goes on to positively identify this John TIMMONS as mine by listing his location and his sons. However, above this it

states "Daniel Jr. [MYERS]...married Francis SIMMONS, sister of Mary who married John TIMMONS."

4 females, 6 Slaves

Nicholas Hanner, Jr., Catherine Timmons, Elizabeth Buckholter. Mentions his plantation

called "Acton". Exrs: George Nunazer, John Poulen. Wits: Elizabeth Hanner, Catherine

Timmons, William Morgan, John Timmons.

"The Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution" by Moss, Page 933, lists Capt. John Timmons with a reference of the "Yearbook 1893". That Charleston City yearbook reprinted a 1886 list of Officers by DeSaussure. In it, on page 236 of the yearbook, it lists Capt. John Timmons with a reference of "Mill's Statistics South Carolina". In Statistics of South Carolina by Mills, 1826, page 627, in the Marion County section under Eminent Men, it says "Captain John Timmons, of Pedee, was a brave officer, and was killed at the Eutaws". Since, in the Audited Accounts, John Timmons swears that a fellow soldier that fought with him at the Eutaws was wounded and deserves compensation, and since he wrote a will in 1818, I assume that this is in error. Since Capt. John Simons was killed at the Battle of Eutahs, I assume that this all started with a mis-print.

Marion County Equity Rolls #4 lists James J. Timmons, wife Mary and says 5 or 6 children.
