FROM: Kirby, Michael

John Kirby and his wife Susannah EC Nettles Kirby were members of Elim Baptist Church.

They had four sons William Isaiah, Simeon Sylvester, James Thomas and Reuben Whitfield and a daughter Sara Ellen.

Simeon Sylvester Kirby or SS Kirby was helped reared and educated by JM Timmons. I found a document in the Furman University Archieves that said the following.

When SS Kirby's mother was on her death bed she ask Rev. Timmons to help educate her son. Timmons had taken a liken to the ten year old. Simeon S Kirby grew up in his church and was able to get accepted into The Citadel. SS Kirby is mentioned several times in the Elim minutes. S S Kirby graduated the citadel in 1860 and was accepted to be educated for the ministry and he left and went to Greenville to study. In April 1862 he finished up his studies then joined the confederate army. S S kirby was killed in battle in 1865. His brother Isaiah ( my gggrandfather) also died in the war and both are listed in the male membership role of Elim and beside there names are "killed in battle" and "dead"

John M timmons was a big part of my Effingham Kirby family.

I was hopeing that somone might have seen S S Kirby mentioned in Timmons papers. I would like to find any info or pictures of S S kirby

thank you Mike
